Tips and Tricks

This is a page of some tips and tricks which may come in useful for some ferret owners out there! If you have any suggestions for this page, let me know!

Litter Training

Litter training can be different depending on where your ferrets are used to going to the toilet. I find the best place to put a litter tray is in the corner/corners of their enclosure because that is their go-to toilet. Obviously it depends on your ferrets preference where you place it. The tray should be big enough for the ferret to stand in and should have quite low sides as I have found the ferrets don't bother stepping over the sides!

I put wooden pellets in the tray to absorb any urine. Its a good idea to put puppy pads around the tray as they will go outside of it! I will then scoop up some of their poo and place it into the trays, in hope they will pick up the smell and decide to go there. This may not always work as I mentioned before mine do decide to go outside of the box occasionally but it just takes time and patience with lots of praise for going in the litter tray!

Nail Clipping

Ferrets will need their nails clipped every two to three weeks and is a quick and easy process, as long as you have some treats on hand! Salmon oil works well or if you don’t have that on hand egg is always a good choice. Put some of the oil on their belly and let them lick it off. This should keep them distracted enough to allow you to trim their nails. In the ferrets nail you will see a red line that runs through it, DO NOT cut close to this or it will bleed. If you do happen to cut too close, and it can happen, apply corn starch or flour to the end of the nail to stop the bleeding.
