Handling and nip training

Ferret kits are lots of fun but are also a challenge. Being young animals, they love to explore using their mouth. Our kits are handled from a young age to get them used to human hands. They will have begun nip training but this will have to continue at their new homes.

You must be consistent and work with your ferret! It is easy to feel as if nothing is working but trust me your hard work will pay off! Handling daily and establishing that biting is not acceptable is key.

  • If the kit nips you, scruff it, as its mother would, and sternly say no before placing it down.

  • I've found that once a kit has stuffed itself on some meat, it is a lot less likely to want to bite.

  • You mustn't pull your hand away quickly from the kit when it nips as this can become a game for them which will make them more eager to do it.

  • Offering your hands to the ferret is something you must do. I'd suggest dipping your fingers in some raw egg and offering that for them to lick off of your fingers. If they nip, Scruff and say no before offering it to them again. Rewarding them for good behaviour is a great thing so make sure they get lots of cuddles!
